Wisconsin Celebrates Transgender Day of Visibility with a Press Conference at the State Capital

Updated: 5 days ago

On March 31, 2025, Wisconsin’s State Capitol became a rallying point for transgender rights as lawmakers and advocates unveiled the Visibility, Equality, and Privacy Package—a trio of bills designed to protect transgender and nonbinary residents. The event, celebrated with joy and determination, stood in stark contrast to Republican-led efforts to restrict transgender youth rights, including bans on sports participation and gender-affirming healthcare.

The Backdrop: Attacks on Trans Youth

The celebration coincided with Republican efforts to bar trans athletes from school sports and block gender-affirming care for minors. Advocates like J.J. Koechell, a 20-year-old trans man, shared emotional testimony against these bills, emphasizing their harm to vulnerable youth.

Voices from the Capital

Sen. Mark Spreitzer (LGBTQ+ Caucus Chair):"Trans lives deserve equal protection under the law—no exceptions."

Rep. Christian Phelps (LGBTQ+ Caucus Vice-Chair):"Thirteen-year-olds are watching. We’re sending a message: You are valued, and we’re fighting for you."

Rep. Ryan Clancy (Parent of a Trans Child):"I shouldn’t have to leave Wisconsin for my child to thrive. This legislation removes barriers to joy."

Martha Marvel (BACGD Organizer):"From hiding in bars to filling supper clubs with trans joy, we’ve proven resilience is our superpower."

Alder Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford (Madison’s First Trans Council Member):"The trans flag over Madison is a beacon: You belong here, and your future is limitless."

Blue Campbell (Trans Advocate):"Our existence isn’t political—it’s human. These bills affirm our right to live authentically without fear."

What’s Next?

While Governor Tony Evers has pledged to veto restrictive bills, advocates urge supporters to contact legislators and amplify trans voices. As BACGD’s own Martha Marvel reminds us: "Our light only grows brighter—no legislation can dim it."
